The History Of Lindsey's

Newnan native Lindsey Hand Barron founded Lindsey's, Inc. in 1948 when he purchased the Austin Appliance Company, holding the Westinghouse Appliance franchise in Newnan. The R.E.A. was just coming into Coweta County, so many people had no electricity, appliances, well pumps or wiring. The demand was great, and the supply of goods and electrical contractors was limited due to World War II. Lindsey Barron's timing was good.
Starting with one truck and two electricians, the business quickly grew to include not only electrical, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning, but furniture and appliances as well as the Pepsi Cola franchise for 13 counties.
In 1958 Lindsey's Inc. moved from LaGrange Street to the building now occupied by the Newnan Times-Herald, and the real estate and insurance business began in the back of the furniture store. Lindsey Barron began selling off the original businesses, focusing on real estate and insurance. The Pepsi and furniture businesses were sold. Finally, in 1962, the real estate business was relocated to its long-time site at 12 Jackson Street.
Throughout this time, Marvin Atchison and Hazel Collier were central figures in Lindsey's Inc. The first real estate salesman was John Bailey. Other early sales people included. A.M. Bowen, who had been Lindsey Barron's high school principal, Sam Kemp, Jean Pegram, R.H. Harrell and Bill Davis.
The insurance business was sold to Glover Insurance Company and the real estate business expanded to include 10 Jackson Street. Lindsey Barron and Marvin Atchison helped Scott Hudgens put together the properties that comprised Shenandoah (now White Oak, Summergrove, Shenandoah and Creekside Industrial Parks) among other early projects.
In 1973 Frank H. Barron joined his father in the business, and in 1977 son, Thomas W. "Chip" Barron, also entered the business. At this time, Lindsey Barron sold the business to his sons as equal partners. Frank Barron became principal broker and President, and Chip Barron became associate broker and Executive Vice President. Lindsey Barron was elected to the position of Chairman of the Board.
A new era began for Lindsey's, Inc. in 1991, with its move to 14 Jackson Street where the floor space available more than doubled.
Tom Barron and Jess Barron have both joined the firm making Lindsey's, Inc. a third generation business. Tom and Jess are now both serving as Vice Presidents.
